Discolored or Stained Teeth

Description: A beautiful white smile is widely associated with an attractive overall appearance. Unfortunately, a bright, white smile may be difficult to maintain. There are a number of reasons why teeth become discolored and stained. Certain types of food and drink, such as coffee, tea, and soda have a higher potential to stain teeth.  Additionally, some types of medications can stain teeth. Tetracycline, an antibiotic that was commonly used to treat a number of illnesses has a major side effect that causes severe staining of teeth. Staining caused by Tetracycline will appear gray or dark brown throughout the entire tooth, and is impossible to remove without professional help. Smokers almost always have some level of staining on their teeth. Medications, habits, trauma, and diet are just some of the factors that can affect the shade of teeth.

Solutions: Recommended solutions can vary depending on the degree of the problem. There are a number of different solutions ranging from: proper dental hygiene, whitening toothpaste, professional teeth whitening, cosmetic bonding, and porcelain veneers.
